アイヌ語の「川」には「ベツ」と「ナイ」の2種類あり、「ベツ」は水かさが増すとすぐに氾濫してしまう危険な川、「ナイ」は岸がしっかりしていて、洪水に強い川を現わしています。つまり、「ノボリベツ」や「石狩川」の古い言い方である「イシカリベツ」という名前は、それらの川が、洪水の危険をはらんでいるという意味が込められたもの。
一方、アイヌ語では「水」にも「ワッカ」と「ベ」という2種類あり、「ワッカ」は飲める水、「ベ」は飲めない水を指しています。ですから、「ワッカナイ」という地名には“川の水を飲んでも大丈夫な上、洪水の恐れもなく、川のそばに暮らしても安全な場所”という意味が込められているんですね。
